Roy was born February 28, 1953, to Roy and Marie Campbell of San Antonio. He graduated from Alamo Heights High School and then received his BBA from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where he met the love of his life, Debbie Reiners Campbell. They were married in 1975, and after living and working in Dallas for six years, they moved to San Antonio in 1981, where Roy opened the branch office of Joyner Mortgage. |
Roy at our 40 Year Reunion in 2011 Remembering Roy Roy Campbell will be profoundly missed by literally hundreds of people whom he touched with his wit, sharp intellect, and loving concern for all. I reconnected with Roy when his wife, Debbie, had the Battle of Flowers job of supplying the Red Cross stations with water and other essentials for the day of the parade. Debbie, Betty Wray Venson, and I, packed the army hummers with water, ice, and for some reason loads of toilet paper. We all jumped in the hummer and waited for the army guy to drive us around to all the Red Cross stations. Well, we waited and we waited but no army guy so Roy took matters into his own hands and commandeered the hummer which belonged to the United States Army, but no to worry, Roy said that on this day it was out on loan to The Battle of Flowers Assoc. and since he was a bank loan officer we went right along with him. Roy drove that thing like he'd been in the Army for 20 years. But what Betty Venson and I did not know was that we were to also stock all the Port O' Potties along the parade route with toilet paper as well as stock the Red Cross Stations. Roy really got a kick out of seeing us "ladies" run in and out of PortO'Potties welding bags of TP and holding our noses. On one foray into a Port O' Pottie, one of us (I shall not name names but her initials are BWV) did not knock loud enough and startled a very large, very tatoo-ed, very pants down, man doing "his business". Roy almost fell out of "his" hummer laughing, by the end of the day we were all gulping for air laughing! Once we were done with "our job", Roy took us "girls" shopping up and down the parade route. I don't think I've ever had so much fun at the parade in all my life! This is just one tiny story out of the hundreds of funny sweet stories you will be reading about Roy. He will be HUGLY missed but I will always remember him laughing until he cried that day at the parade. Love to all ~ Carolyn Creamer Mayo ~ Despite our frequent youthful shenanigans together and my nefarious influence on Roy during our adolescence, we graduated from high school the same day. Roy, standing tall at the head of the class, a shining beacon of reason and focus, while I was firmly rooted in the mediocrity of a C+ student looking for the next cheap thrill. The other day, as I drove by City Hall of Terrell Hills, I fondly recalled the day when Roy and I were picked up by the Terrell Hills police and brought to the station for soliciting donations door to door for the American Cancer Society. While our hearts were in the right place, our procrastination caused us to begin door knocking a couple of weeks after the official program date had terminated. A quick phone call to Col. Walter DeBill, sponsor of the Key Club, cleared things up and we were sent on our way. In retrospective, Terrell Hills is a prime place for those types of scams, but to Roy and me, it was just Zambrano Road. It was Roy's recommendation to honor Mr. Foerster and make a class donation to the Paul A.
