Anna Belle Gilmer Rodgers

October 24, 1909 - October 28, 2002


Anna Belle Gilmer Rodgers died October 28, 2002 at the age of 93. She was born October 24, 1909 in Lockhart, Texas, the daughter of Blanche Hartsfield Gilmer and Peachie Ridgeway Gilmer.

 

After graduation from Lockhart High School, she attended Westmoreland College in San Antonio and earned an associate degree in education. She returned to Lockhart and taught for one year in a four teacher rural school in the Sea Willow Community. During the next seven years, she taught at Martindale, Texas, and was instrumental in securing accreditation for eleventh grade English. In 1936 Anna Belle moved to San Antonio to join the English Department of Alamo Heights High School. During the summers she attended the University of Texas in Austin and earned a Masters Degree in English and Education.

 

In 1974 she retired after teaching forty-six years with thirty-eight years at Alamo Heights High School. In 1980 Anna Belle married Clifton R. Rodgers who preceded her in death July 9, 1986. She is survived by stepchildren, Kay Lynn Rodgers, MD and Jack A. Rodgers, seven step grandchildren, cousins Margery Harpley and Margaret Ellen Smith of Houston and devoted friend and caregiver Stella Chacon. MEMORIAL SERVICE FRIDAY 11: 00 A.M. The family appreciates the care Anna Belle received at Morningside Manor and requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the scholarship fund at Alamo Heights United Methodist Church where Anna Belle worshiped for 64 years or the Morningside Ministries Covenant Fund.
